The Essex County Isolation Hospital was built in 1905, the hospital also went by “SoHo Hospital Essex County” and served as the backdrop in the 2001 film "A Beautiful Mind." Years earlier it housed a range of residents from isolating tuberculosis patients, it was a residence for orphaned children and then became a geriatric center in 1955. In 1996, it became New Jersey’s first free-standing cancer research facility. In 2012, the property was actioned off.
